ROME -- Renal cell cancers that are ideally suited for percutaneous radiofrequency ablation are not more than 3 cm in diameter and are located peripherally in the kidney, Dr. Michael A. Farrell said at the annual meeting of the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe.
He and his colleagues at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn., have performed percutaneous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) on 206 renal tumors in 169 patients. Based on this experience, along with smaller published series from other centers, the local tumor control rate is 95%-100% when these criteria for tumor size and location are met, he said.
