Legislation mandating that all middle school girls be vaccinated with the quadrivalent human papillomavirus vaccine has been greeted with concern by leaders of some medical organizations.
At press time, such legislation had been introduced or was under discussion in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia.
Most of the bills--as well as an executive order signed in early February by Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R)--would bar public school admission to girls who are entering the sixth grade and have not received the HPV vaccine. All proposals maintain opt-out provisions for medical, religious, or philosophical reasons.
