When Alberta women were given the vote in 1917, military personnel overseas were permitted to vote for two candidates. In a shrewd move, Lieut. Roberta MacAdams, a nursing sister, urged the men to make their own first choice and then "give your other vote to the sister." It worked and MacAdams became one of the first two women elected to a legislature in the British Empire.
