McGill, a Calgary doctor, had been a member of the 12th Mounted Rifles when war broke out in the autumn of 1914. He was immediately attached to the 31st Battalion and set to work to examine new recruits. The fair grounds became army headquarters, the stables the temporary barracks.
They trained all winter, and in March, 1915, they sailed left for England where they spent another six months training before going to France.
McGill was with the 31st as they fought battles at St. Eloi, Sanctuary Wood, the Somme, Vimy, and other places. As ...
