Water UK has called for the setting up of statutory protection zones around drinking water abstraction areas with defined restrictions on diffuse pollution.
The water industry body made the call in its responses to three consultations from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) on nitrates, diffuse pollution, and good agricultural practice.
Water UK said the Environment Agency should get greater powers to protect drinking water within nitrate vulnerable zones. It said a specific list of restrictions should be drawn up within these areas. It did not advocate general prohibition but said tight restrictions could be both proportional and targeted.
