Martin Booth explains what the Environment Agency expects the WFD's 'good' ecological status will mean for the UK
The European Union Water Framework Directive (WFD) gives us an opportunity to plan for and deliver a better water environment. Successful implementation will go a long way to protecting and enhancing the quality of our groundwaters, rivers, lakes, estuaries and coasts.
To do this the directive sets a target of aiming to achieve "good" ecological and chemical status for surface waters. This means taking a broad look at the ecological health of our waters, as well as achieving traditional chemical standards.
