VISA SNAGS HYPERMARKET CHAIN FOR CONTACTLESS PROGRAM

Visa International announced the largest hypermarket chain in Taiwan, Carrefour, would accept its contactless application, Visa payWave, as part of a cobranded card program involving Union Bank of Taiwan.

The large France-based retailer has nearly 50 stores on the island. Visa said Carrefour has installed 2,000 contactless readers all together in the stores to take the new Carrefour Visa payWave card. All told, about 3,000 stores in Taiwan accepted payWave as of the end of July, Visa said. Banks have issued more than 1.4 million contactless cards on the island since late 2005, according to Visa.
