In response to a Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) report, Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-MT) is calling on the IRS to step up efforts to ensure the integrity of e-file providers and, in turn, protect taxpayers and prevent fraud.

This year, 260,000 authorized electronic return originators (EROs) submitted electronic tax returns for 55 million taxpayers, according to Baucus. He said the TIGTA report revealed problems in the following areas:
