Roma is the proper designation of gypsies, and their language is known as Romanes. Their origins are uncertain, but they seem to have a special connection to Romania, where perhaps as many as a million of them live. Around the countryside there they still enjoy their immemorial way of life, with traveling caravans and campsites and many children. It's a tribute to their determination to be themselves.
