NATIONAL REVIEW is pleased to announce the publication of Here, There & Everywhere: Collected Writings of Jay Nordlinger. The book contains almost 100 pieces, on a great variety of subjects. It's a little over 500 pages long, with a generous index. The cost is $24.95, with additional copies costing $19.95. You may use the order form printed on page 45, shortly before the Books, Arts & Manners section. And we thought we'd introduce the book by printing a version of Nordlinger's preface, below.
Here, There & Everywhere is a grab bag of a book, as its title may suggest. It contains pieces from many locales, and about many subjects. The book is organized into eight chapters, beginning with "Society."
In this chapter, there are pieces on the honorific "Dr.," the pronunciation of place-names, the behavior of bookstore clerks--that sort of thing. The second chapter is "Politics." It begins with an account of Election Night 2000--a very strange evening (and early morning), as you may recall. And I include a couple of look-backs at President Clinton. (Look if you dare.)
"People" gives you 19 of them--people, that is. Among them are--let's see--George W. Bush, Robert Conquest, Natan Sharansky, Phil Gramm, Naguib Mahfouz, Condi Rice, Al Sharpton, Garrison Keillor, Maxine Waters, Rosie O'Donnell, Cap Weinberger, Rodney Dangerfield ... and assorted others.
In "The World," I have a speech in Greece, reports from Davos, reports from the Middle East, a speech at Harvard (about Solzhenitsyn's famous commencement address there). And then comes a chapter called "Cuba and China."
People sometimes say, "Why do you write so often about human rights in Cuba and China?" And one answer is, "Because so few others do. The fields are rather open." Cubans, in particular, suffer from the neglect of the world press, or, worse, misrepresentation. I've offered a few crumbs; Cubans act as though these were big fat loaves.
Next comes a brief chapter on golf, in which I discuss Tiger, Hogan, and other figures, large and small. And then ... "Music."
