Not driven to win
A roboticized Chevrolet Tahoe named "Boss'' drove itself to top honors and a $2 million prize in the DARPA Urban Challenge, Nov. 3 in California.
Entered by Pittsburgh's Carnegie Mellon University and General Motors, the fully autonomous Tahoe proved the best of 11 final competitors by completing a 60-mile course of simulated city and suburban streets in less than six hours with the fewest errors.
Coming in second and earning $1 million, was "Junior,'' a roboticized Volkswagen Passat from Stanford, the team that won the 132-mile open-desert contest in 2005. A Virginia Tech entry placed third for $500,000.
