The most wicked Viper ever to leave Dodge's Connor Avenue assembly plant in Detroit-the Viper SRT10 ACR-will be unleashed on the public at the Los Angeles auto show on Nov. 13.
The ACR (for American Club Racer) is a street-legal Viper built for the racetrack. Based on the 2008 Viper coupe, the ACR version features weight savings, suspension modifications and aerodynamic improvements over the base car.
"This car is putting a halo on Viper,'' said Herb Helbig, the car's chief engineer and the Viper's spiritual father. "It's a purpose-built car tuned for the racetrack, but you can drive it on the street.''
Helbig said engineers working on the car, which is codenamed EM50, call it a "tarmac assault vehicle.''
"There is nothing on this vehicle that doesn't improve performance,'' he said.
The ACR model uses the same 600-hp, 560-lb-ft aluminum V10 and Tremec six-speed manual transmission as the new Viper ("A Bigger Bang,'' AW, Sept. 10).
