In its finest hour, the Tokyo motor show is a mash-up of science fiction and Disney. This pastiche is best seen in the far reaches of the Makuhari Messe's North Hall, where the motorcycles are stashed like wayward schoolchildren.
This year, the award for the planet's most progressive thinkers and stylists again goes to Yamaha.
The Tesseract four-wheeled motorcycle took insectoidal design to new heights. Its articulating suspension allows the bike to lean over hard while maintaining all tires' contact patches. Remember the Dodge Tomahawk concept? The Tesseract eats it while its heart is still beating.
At the other extreme, Yamaha's electric Bobby seemed to convey the mating of a moped and an iPod. The tiny scooter collapses to fit into a car's trunk, and the power can be turned on and off by one's cell phone. The word "neato'' comes to mind.
Suzuki took a shot at sci-fi design with its Biplane concept. Its retro-future styling filters Boyd Coddington's Aluma-Coupe through Metropolis. Its ...
