Welliver remembered for strong beliefs.

Oct. 31--Warren Welliver "was a person who fought hard for things he believed in. And when he was on the" Missouri Supreme Court, "he was a person who did the same thing," said Chip Robertson, a former judge on the Missouri Supreme Court. "You have to respect people who have deep beliefs."

A lawyer, former state senator and member of the state's highest court, Welliver died Monday at his home in Columbia. He was 87.

Born on Feb. 24, 1920, in Butler, Welliver served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy from 1941 to 1945. During World War II, he married Ruth Rose Galey in Key West, Fla., and she survives.
