Oct. 31--Four months after their contract governing medical student rotations at Toledo Hospital expired, ProMedica Health System and the University of Toledo have reached an agreement securing those clinical spots for the rest of the school year.
ProMedica and UT, meanwhile, will continue to discuss unrelated business issues that were included in the sometimes bitter negotiations over the medical students.
The biggest divide involves health-care coverage for employees on the former Medical College of Ohio campus, who are given financial incentives to stay at UT for treatment, a common practice among hospitals.
The medical education contract finalized Monday allows UT to continue sending about a dozen third-year medical students to Toledo Hospital for pediatrics and obstetrics/gynecology rotations every six weeks. The latest extension was set to expire Friday.
UT officials have been trying for months to separate educational from business issues -- and were hoping for a five-year deal with ProMedica.
Having an educational agreement settled through June 30 without business entanglements is a relief, said Dr. Lloyd Jacobs, UT's president.
