Oct. 30--The auditorium at Roland-Grise Middle School gets lots of action over the weekends.
Thalian Association Children's Theatre takes center stage there some Friday and Saturday nights. Every Sunday morning, the Port City Community Church turns the public school's assembly area into a worship center.
Roughly 25 to 30 organizations use New Hanover County school facilities each month, including auditoriums, classrooms or libraries, according to district officials.
But the policy for community use of school property and facilities could undergo some changes. The policy was adopted in 1975 and revised in 1996. Recent controversy over leasing New Hanover High School's Brogden Hall for a rap concert has led some school officials to consider ways the policy could be changed.
Jeannette Nichols, chairwoman of the New Hanover County school board's policy committee, said that for the past year, the district has been reviewing the policy to see whether rental fees and hours of use should be changed. Security requirements in the policy are also an issue the district will take a closer look at, Nichols said.
"It'll be a while before we get it changed," she said. "But it's coming."
