Oct. 29--Tami Hinshaw loves shelving books at the Myrtle Grove Branch Library -- when she can find a place to put them.
The library simply doesn't have enough room for a diverse book collection, not to mention computer resources and meeting space, said Hinshaw, an avid reader who volunteers at the library by shelving books.
Most books are shipped in from the county's other libraries at readers' requests, and Hinshaw said it would be wonderful to check out a book that she plucked from the shelf without having to wait.
Library officials and patrons agree it's time for a new library in the growing Monkey Junction area and plan to push the idea with county officials in the coming months.
"It's in my recommendation that we need to do something," said Library Director David Paynter, who said securing a new Myrtle Grove library is one of his priorities. "This county is growing so quickly we need to keep the infrastructure up, and that includes library infrastructure as well."
The Myrtle Grove library is only 6,987 square feet of space with inadequate parking, compared with the 33,500 square feet of the Northeast branch and a larger parking lot it shares with the University of North Carolina Executive Development Center.
