Oct. 27--Those who said a dog park couldn't happen here were, it turns out, barking up the wrong tree.
The 1.3-acre dog park -- or in politically correct parlance, "off-leash area" -- that began on a trial basis in LaSalle Park on Aug. 4 is now permanent, Erie County Executive Joel A. Giambra and Assemblyman Sam Hoyt said Friday.
In short order, the abandoned softball diamond on Field 7, where dogs and their owners meet, has proven to be a popular draw -- with a group claiming as many as 2,000 people have taken their dogs there in a single week.
"It's been such a smashing success," Hoyt said. "In the almost 16 years I've served, I don't think I've done something that was so easy and so sensible, and that has brought me more gratitude from the community than this initiative."
Dr. Reed Stevens, board chairman of BuffOLA (Buffalo Off-Leash Areas), said he and others pursued a fenced-in area where dogs could legally run free for six years. In the interim, parkland along Rumsey Road, in Delaware Park, and in Shoshone Park have been unofficial, unfenced gathering spots.
Erie County Parks Commissioner Angelo Sedita, Hoyt and "micro-park" advocate Jay Mc- Carthy were among those who helped make the dog park a reality.
