Oct. 26--Gov. Timothy M. Kaine is trying to fend off Republican suggestions that he's weak on illegal immigration -- an issue the GOP hopes will help save its legislative majority.
Appearing yesterday on the Richmond radio station WRVA (1140), the Democrat said the state is doing more on immigration because the federal response has been inadequate.
Kaine said he approved the deployment of Virginia National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border in 2006 and that, shortly after taking office earlier that year, he directed state police to contact immigration officials on suspects who might be in the country illegally.
