On July 2, 2007, the Hammill Institute on Disabilities, a nonprofit public charity, acquired ownership of PRO-ED's 14 professional journals, including The Journal of Special Education. The Institute, which is now the publisher of these journals, was organized exclusively for charitable, scientific, and educational purposes to enhance the well-being of people with disabilities, their parents, and the professionals who are devoted to their interests. The Institute has entered a strategic relationship with Sage Publications, whereby the Hammill Institute will own, publish, and manage the journals, including selection of editors and determining overall editorial direction. Sage will assist the Institute in the production, marketing, and distribution of its journals.
