In "Web 2.0 & Libraries," I presented five 2.0 tools that libraries were using--blogs, RSS, instant messaging, wikis, and Flikr. (1) The choice of these five tools was based on my work with Jenny Levine and our Social Tools and Libraries Roadshow. A lot has happened since the publication of that issue of Library Technology Reports last year. This chapter will detail recent innovations with blogs, wikis, and other tools in the world of libraries and social computing. We'll see how the conversations and participation have been carried forward with enhancements and increased use.
Blogs
The blog tracking and searching site Technorati frequently publishes blog statistics. In April 2007, David Sifry posted this informative overview of the blogosphere as tracked by Technorati:
* 70 million weblogs
* about 120,000 new weblogs each day, or 1.4 new blogs every second
* 1.5 million posts per day, or 17 posts per second
* growth from 35 million to 75 million blogs in 320 days (2)
