If the Dunlop Drivers Cup Regionals had an official theme song, it would have to be a hard-rock version of "Anything You Can Do (I Can Do Better).'' Twelve competitors duked it out using dirt bikes, track cars, rally cars, ATVs, SUVs, karts and autocross cars, all shod with Dunlop competition rubber.
The showdown took place Sept. 18-20 at Virginia International Raceway in Danville. But long before the contestants donned their racing gear, they had to win another type of competition: essay writing. Dunlop received more than 1200 dissertations from racer wannabes explaining why they should be selected. Fittingly, an editor for the TV series Survivor was among those who made the cut.
One purpose of the event was to prove that for any type of competition, Dunlop makes good tires. But most racing enthusiasts already know that. John Boyd Dunlop started making motorcycle racing tires in the late 1800s, and the company has been winning big races at venues from the Isle of Man to Le Mans ever since. Given that the Cup vehicles are identical, the event really boils down to an adrenaline-packed spec series to see who has the biggest, um, skill set.
