The women's track coach at the University of Hawaii-Manoa is suing the school, saying that administrators are violating Title IX by slighting her program.
Carmyn James claims that Hawaii gives her less support and fewer staff members than male coaches receive and that administrators excluded her from discussions about her team. After repeatedly complaining that her program was being shortchanged, James decided to file suit.
In addition to the school dissing her program, she earns far less than the men's track coach, who has a multi-year contract while she works year-to-year.
James' move is rare in college sports; few coaches sue their current employer due to expected retaliation, but legal experts think it could occur more often.
