The Detroit Public School System has devised a formula based strictly on a percentage of the base salary of a first-year teacher.

Head coaches for football, basketball, and cheerleading are the highest paid - $3,066. Assistant coaches are paid $1,804 and are responsible for coaching the jayvee teams.

Why does cheerleading rate so high? Because its coaches have to work successive seasons (football and basketball) before getting a break.

Though I coach the varsity football team, I don't get paid extra. The coaching comes with the job.

The school system works on one-year contracts, and coaches get an increase whenever a new teacher's contract is ratified.

The stipends really come down to pennies per hour for all the time the coaches put in, but they usually aren't in it for the money but for the satisfaction derived from working with young people.
