FUN FUN; Mazdaspeed 3 continues to charm.(News)

Our long-term Mazdaspeed 3 has a new nickname, courtesy of Senior Editor Wilson: Mazdacrazyfast 3. "I genuinely cannot imagine being able to use any more speed on a regular daily basis,'' he explains. "At a track day or on a favorite mountain road, sure, but day-in, day-out commuting? This is all you need.''

Fellow drivers echoed Wilson's power assessment as we rolled up 4660 miles during the car's second quarter in the AutoWeek fleet.

Nearly every note in the logbook details the car's eagerness to run, sometimes above the legal speed limit. "From 80 to 100 happens quickly,'' wrote one editor. "Driving this daily, I'd probably lose my license as quickly as I would in a Porsche 911, except for one thing: Cops don't look at this car with lust in their eyes, eager to nail your butt to the wall just for driving it. It looks like what it is: a four-door hatch Q-ship.''

Another word that was plentiful in the notes was "fun.''

"This is a fun car and one I'm finding I enjoy more and more each time I'm behind the wheel. It's such a hoot in the handling department,'' said one editor.

Drivers also have noted the car's styling, not just for the convenience of the hatchback-which has swallowed up luggage for airport trips, the bounty from a three-person shopping spree and all the accouterments needed for a Fourth of July fireworks show-but also for its general good looks.
