Throughput at major ports in India increased by 14 percent in the first half of the current fiscal year ended Sept. 30, according to preliminary data released by the Indian Ports Association.
The country's 12 major ports, six each on the west and east coasts, handled 244 million tons of cargo compared to 214 million tons in the same period a year ago.
Overall traffic, however, fell short of the Ministry of Shipping's target of 252 million tons set for the six-month period.
