The speculation proved correct (Competition, Sept. 24): Budweiser will sponsor Kasey Kahne at Gillett Evernham Motorsports, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. will be sponsored by Mountain Dew, Amp energy drink and the National Guard at Hendrick Motorsports next year. Rival team owner Robert Yates, whose Fords carried No. 88 for 12 years, symbolically passed the number to Earnhardt in prerace ceremonies at Dover.
SPEED TO ARCA
Team Red Bull and Eddie Sharp Racing announced that recently fired Scuderia Toro Rosso Formula One driver Scott Speed (Competition, Sept. 3) will make his stock-car debut in the No. 21 Red Bull Toyota in the ARCA Series at Talladega Superspeedway on Oct. 5.
Eddie Sharp Racing is one of ARCA's top teams, giving Speed access to good equipment and personnel. Unlike fellow former F1 drivers Juan Pablo Montoya and Jacques Villeneuve, Speed has no high-speed oval experience, making it unlikely NASCAR would allow him to race immediately in Nextel Cup.
