Byline: JONATHAN WONG
Unlike its girl-car/guy-car approach with the Compass and the Patriot, Jeep did only one version of the second-generation Liberty. With the original truck skewed to female buyers, Jeep broadened the 2008 Liberty's appeal in hopes of garnering a 50/50 sales ratio between the sexes.
To bring in the men, the new Liberty has a more rugged and chiseled design-no more cutesy round frog eyes-along with Jeep's signature seven-slot grille and clamshell hood. Gone is the rear-mounted spare tire, moved underneath as the swinging tailgate is replaced with a liftgate and flipping glass window.
Off-road prowess improves with two available four-wheel-drive systems (SelecTrac II and ControlTrac II), hill-start assist and standard hill-descent control for four-wheel-drive models. The front air dam is also removable to prevent damage and improve clearance when venturing onto the trail.
Liberty also boasts better on-road performance, with more stability from the wider track, new short-and long-arm front and live-axle five-link rear suspension and tuning for a more direct steering feel.
Interior comfort benefits from deeper-bolstered front seats and 1.5 inches of additional legroom in back. The trunk is 3.3 inches longer, with a waterproof storage bin beneath the load floor. A fold-flat front passenger seat is optional.
