Sep. 26--Alexander County commissioners voted this week to hold a referendum on an additional 1/4-cent sales tax on Jan. 8. Other counties across the state will hold referendums on the sales tax at different times. Neighboring Catawba County will hold one in November. In the recent N.C. General Assembly session, state legislators gave counties the authority to hold referendums on a sales tax or a land-transfer fee.
