Sep. 25--The St. Louis Jewish Community Center is selling almost half the original acreage donated for its home just north of Creve Coeur in the late 1950s.
The center's board is selling 52 acres in the north and west sections of the campus for $9.5 million to Levinson Homes and Touchstone Homes, which intend to build about 200 houses. The center will use the money for an endowment for its programs.
The center's 122-acre campus was donated by I.E. Millstone, who remembered Monday that when he bought the site it "was nothing but a cornfield." Even in the 1950s, he said, he knew the population was moving westward.
"It was the best investment I ever made in my life," Millstone said.
The campus along Schuetz Road west of Lindbergh Boulevard is named after Millstone, who at 100 is considered a patriarch of the St. Louis Jewish community. He was consulted about the sale.
Center officials say no existing programs will be affected by the sale of the undeveloped acreage. It follows a 30-month study by a special 10-member task force.
