Sep. 25--ST. LOUIS -- Federal appeals judges asked pointed questions Monday of lawyers defending Missouri's 2-year-old policy banning inmates from obtaining abortions unless medically necessary.

The three-member panel of the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals here heard oral arguments in a class action case originally brought by an inmate who initially was denied an abortion but later got one under court order.

A decision could take months.

The inmate, known as "Jane Roe," got the abortion Oct. 20, 2005, after ACLU lawyers sued and U.S. District Judge Dean Whipple in Jefferson City ordered officials to transport her to the only available clinic in the state: Planned Parenthood, in St. Louis.
