Sep. 25--Clayton -- When lawyer Ernest Brasier was found shot to death at his desk in downtown Clayton last year, baffled investigators looked for anything unusual among his clients, co-workers and private life.
Detectives took note of the fact that another lawyer in the practice, Daniel Bennett, had abruptly left the firm some weeks before, divorced and left the country.
It seemed to have no bearing on Brasier's killing, police said, although the fact found its way into at least one TV news report. Police said at the time that Bennett was not a suspect.
Now Bennett, 48, has been found dead in St. Louis in what may be no more than a coincidence. His cause of death has not been determined, but there was no apparent violence, officials said.
Clayton police Capt. Kevin Murphy said Monday that he was aware of Bennett's death, but he would not say whether detectives believe it had any connection to Brasier.
"It is significant only in the fact that he did work at the firm with Mr. Brasier," Murphy said. "Beyond that, I can't comment."
