For quite a while now, whenever I've thought about the job of "reforming" or "retaking" the university, a little voice emerges to ask, "Are you mad?" For the most part, intelligent opinion about the problem of reforming the university is divided into two camps. There are those who think it cannot be done, that the university is beyond redemption, and that more's the pity.
