In his review of David Gelernter's Americanism: The Fourth Great Western Religion ("Apologia Americana," August 13), Christopher Levenick criticizes the author on many grounds, including for ridiculing the " 'spike-decorated clown hats' of the Kaiser's armies."

I would like to point out that, in 1872, the U.S. Army adopted just such "spike-decorated clown hats" as part of the cavalry's dress uniform. Ours were embellished with voluminous horse-hair plumes sprouting from the peaks of the spikes, falling to the eyebrows in front, the collar in the rear. ...
