Amid cheers from an overflow crowd of more than 500 on Monday, Gates County commissioners opposed plans for a Navy jet practice airfield here, not far from a state park known for its ancient bald cypress and woodland wildlife.

"Somebody told me, the Navy seeks the path of least resistance," said David Brown, vice chairman of the Gates County Board of Commissioners. "We're not going to be the path of least resistance."

The commission's opposition is nonbinding. It was meant to show the county's resistance to hosting the airfield.
