Sep. 22--The number of guns at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools rose sharply last year, reaching a six-year high, according to a report the state will release later this fall.
The 2006-07 violence tally, which CMS provided at the Observer's request, adds urgency to concerns raised this week when police found a loaded gun on a 17-year-old Olympic High student who had just confronted a teacher.
CMS reported 28 firearms (which don't include BB and air guns) at schools last year, up from 18 the previous year. Three have been found in the first month of this school year.
The district reports 59 assaults on staff, up from 41 the previous year.
The surge in serious incidents mirrors an increase in juvenile crime reported by Charlotte-Mecklenburg police, said CMS Chief Operating Officer Maurice Green.
