The RCN has asked the NMC to set up a voluntary register for assistant practitioners.

In a letter to Sarah Thewlis, chief executive of the NMC, RCN general secretary Dr Peter Carter said he felt the move was a 'pragmatic first step' towards regulating all healthcare assistants (HCAs).

An RCN policy document on the issue claims DoH moves to increase the numbers of assistant practitioners on Agenda for Change band 4 mean these unregulated roles present a significant risk to patient care.
