Sep. 17--For three months in 2005, Liz Downing was a school board member.
She was appointed when her friend, Lee Kindberg, resigned the south suburban District 6 seat. Before Downing had time to make a mark, she lost her election bid -- doomed, many say, by being a Democrat in a heavily Republican district.
A few months later, another board member resigned. Downing applied again. This time, the board chose a fresher face.
