Sep. 16--LOUDON, N.H. -- An odd sound circulated through the garages at New Hampshire International Speedway this weekend.
It was the sound of people saying they felt sorry for four-time Nextel Cup champion Jeff Gordon.
It was more empathy than sympathy. Gordon's peers empathized with the fact that eight days ago, Gordon had a warm, comfy lead in the points standings. Then, just like that, he was second in points.
The reason, of course, is the Chase. It starts this week with the Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire International Speedway, and with its start comes a reseeding of its participants.
Because he only got four victories and the 40 bonus points that went with them, Gordon will begin the Chase in second place behind teammate Jimmie Johnson, a six-time winner this year.
"I would be disappointed (were he Gordon), for sure," Jeff Burton said. "But that's what this point structure does."
