VILLENEUVE DEBUTS
Jacques Villeneuve tested for Bill Davis Racing at Chicagoland Speedway. Villeneuve drove a Toyota Tundra with the No. 27-made famous by his father, Gilles, and used by Villeneuve in CART. NASCAR Truck Series championship contender Mike Skinner (see Scoreboard) ran a few laps, and then Villeneuve hit the track. By his 12th lap, his time of 31.67 seconds was within 0.6 second of Skinner's best. He finished the first day 0.2 second off Skinner. Villeneuve's best lap overall was 31.0 seconds. He will make his first NASCAR start in the truck race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway Sept. 22.
PHOENIX CANCELED
First, Champ Car officially (and finally) announced that its China race was off (Competition, Sept. 3). Now, its Dec. 2 season finale in Phoenix is dead, according to promoter Dale Jensen, who also promoted the season opener in Las Vegas. Jensen said the race couldn't draw enough sponsors.
He said the decision has no effect on the Las Vegas Grand Prix, which is scheduled again to start the 2008 season next April.
This means that Champ Car ran its last U.S. race of the year on Aug. 12, at Road America. Australia hosts a race Oct. 21; Mexico City has the finale on Nov. 11.
