Byline: ROGER HART
High-end Audis have long been the choice of German bankers, thanks to styling that's less ostentatious and gregarious than that from either Mercedes-Benz or BMW. But even German bankers love to zip along the autobahn, and Audis have long been able to play with the best in the left lane. They're just not quite as flashy doing so.
Then along came the S line from Ingolstadt. With bigger wheels and tires, a more aggressive appearance and a ton of power underhood, the bankers' cover is getting blown.
While few on our staff will ever be mistaken for German bankers, it was easy to jump at the chance to add an S6 to the long-term fleet.
Getting a four-door sedan powered by a 435-hp, direct-injected V10 from a Lamborghini Gallardo is a no-brainer. Mated with a quick-shifting six-speed automatic, in tests it romps from 0 to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds, slower than the factory's claim of 5.1 seconds. While not quite as quick as the latest-generation BMW M5 (4.5 seconds), anything nearing 5.0 seconds is plenty fast for a 4486-pound sedan.
Plus, the S6 is fitted with Audi's quattro awd system, a standard feature that's welcome when the snow flies.
The base car's sticker price is $74,020, making it a bargain compared with its M5 ($83,195) and Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG ($85,775) competitors. To make the yearlong test more comfortable, we added the technology package, which includes voice recognition, keyless ignition, advanced parking system, Audi navigation system and satellite radio ($3,900). We also added adaptive cruise control ($2,000); and the warm weather package includes sunroof, power rear and manual side-window sunshades ($1,190). Finally, carbon-fiber inlays ($400) and rear side supplemental restraints ($350) were included. Our total was $81,860, still less than the German counterparts.
