If you decide to take European delivery of a new car, here are some tips to remember.
* Plan to arrive at least a day earlier than your scheduled delivery. Most U.S. flights arrive in the morning or early afternoon, and you'll need a good night's sleep before picking up your car. Following our overnight flight to Munich, we were driven straight from the airport to Ingolstadt to pick up the car. The process took a couple of hours, and then we spent time touring the museum. We opted out of a tour of the Audi A3 factory because we ran out of steam.
* Pack some favorite CDs or an iPod if your new car is so equipped. European radio loses its appeal quickly; neither Sirius nor XM satellite radio is offered in Europe.
* For the 2007 model year, Audi's in-car navigation system for U.S.-spec cars does not work in Europe. Audi is working on changing that for the future, but in the meantime, be sure to ask your dealer whether your car's nav system will work in Europe. Audi provided us with a portable TomTom unit that worked great. Short of that or a similar portable system, maps are good to have along.
