Sep. 12--A fourth-grader had a gun in his waistband and two bullets in his hand during class at Briarwood Elementary School today, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said.
Another student saw the 9-year-old boy playing with the bullets and told a teacher assistant, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools officials said. While walking the boy to the office, the teacher noticed a bulge under the boy's shirt and found a .380-caliber gun in his waistband.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police Sgt. David Schwob said it is still unclear why the child had the gun. The gun was not loaded but the bullets were for a .380, he said.
