For all those people whose pc lacks a cd-rom drive, Seattle FilmWorks has an alternative to Photo CD. For $13.90, SFW will develop and print a 24-exposure roll of film, scan the images and compress them onto a 3 1/2" floppy disk. What's more, when it mails your prints, negatives and disk to you, it will throw in a roll of blank film and a postpaid mailer for your next order.

The result is not quite the same as with Photo CD. For one thing, SFW provides only one resolution: 24-bit color at 640x480 pixels. That's a good resolution for displaying the images on your computer screen, but it limits the size of any printed version. Photo CD offers multiple resolutions from …
