Sep. 12--WASHINGTON -- The leader of American forces in Iraq acknowledged Tuesday that he doesn't know if the current strategy will make the United States safer.

His comments came before critical Democrats and some increasingly skeptical Republican members of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Answering a question posed by Sen. John Warner, a Republican who in recent months has continued to question America's war policy, Gen. David Petraeus said he has been too intent on improving security on the ground to ponder if it would have the long-term effect of protecting the United States.
