Sep. 12--Charlotte-Mecklenburg Superintendent Peter Gorman got a $21,250 bonus and an extra year on his contract on a split school board vote Tuesday.
The board's majority said they wanted to send a signal that Gorman has set the district on the right path during his first year on the job.
"It sends a message not only locally but nationally that we're satisfied in the direction we're moving," George Dunlap said of the contract extension, which now runs through the 2010-11 school year. Gorman could choose to leave earlier, but the board would pay a financial penalty if it dismissed him without cause.
