PHOENIX _ Stopping short of a blanket denial, St. Louis Cardinals right fielder Rick Ankiel and club officials insisted Friday that he did nothing to violate Major League Baseball's policy toward banned substances as he recovered from ligament replacement surgery in 2004.
"Any medication that I've received in my career has always been under a doctor's care," Ankiel said.
The New York Daily News reported in its Friday editions that Ankiel had received eight shipments of human growth hormone (HGH) from Signature Pharmacy in Orlando, Fla., from January-December 2004. The paper cited documents it obtained as well as sources familiar with an investigation of illegal Internet prescription drug sales that has so far brought 22 indictments and nine convictions.
Asked directly if he used HGH, Ankiel said, "I'm not going into the list of what my doctors have prescribed for me. I've been through a lot emotionally and physically. There are doctor-patient privileges and I hope you guys respect those privileges."
