Audi has poured radically new underpinnings, advanced gasoline- engine technology, a classy interior and the latest safety features into its larger and roomier fifth-generation A4.
Pictured here for the first time, ahead of a public debut at the Frankfurt motor show Sept. 11, the 2009 sedan will go on sale in North America around this time next year.
Prices remain under wraps, but the starting price is likely to remain close to today's level, with any rise probably offset by increased levels of standard equipment.
Reacting to criticism of the outgoing A4's ride and handling, Audi has emphasized driving dynamics with this new model. At the heart of the German sedan is a new chassis developed under the working title MLP (modular longitudinal platform)-as used beneath the mechanically identical A5. Supporting both front- and rear-wheel drive, it places the front axle farther forward, with a lengthened wheelbase and wider track.
Further attention has been focused on the suspension, a mixture of a five-link arrangement (front) and multilinks (rear) fabricated almost entirely from aluminum for improved response and greater control.
