ZHUHAI OFF
Champ Car officials will confirm any day now the worst-kept secret of their season (Competition, June 11): The race planned for China in October finally has been canned. As previously reported, the FIA would not give China a place on its international sporting calendar because of its planned date being too close to the country's Formula One race Oct. 7.
MARTIN IN NO. 8
Nobody at Dale Earnhardt Inc. will confirm it, but many NASCAR insiders expect Cup veteran Mark Martin to share the Army-sponsored No. 8 Chevrolet next year with Cup newcomer Aric Almirola.
"If there's anyone who would represent Dale Earnhardt Inc. and what the No. 8 means to this company, it would be Mark Martin,'' said DEI president Max Siegel. "But there's been no official decision made on this yet.'' Martin and Almirola joined DEI in July, when it absorbed financially troubled Ginn Racing.
SPEEDING INTO NASCAR
Nextel Cup's Team Red Bull appears willing to help ex-Formula One driver Scott Speed, 24, into NASCAR, but the road may be long and winding. Speed, who recently lost his F1 ride with Scuderia Toro Rosso (Competition, Aug. 13), has almost no oval-track experience at any level. Until he gains that experience, NASCAR isn't likely to clear him for its Craftsman, Busch or Cup series.
