Stephen Brauer is a businessman and a former U.S. ambassador to Belgium, but as he saws at the big steering wheel of his 1929 Rolls-Royce Phantom 1 Brewster Derby, he is in his element.
"You have to really plan ahead when you're driving this car,'' he said as he negotiated a section of 17-Mile Drive as part of this year's Pebble Beach Tour d'Elegance. "You can't let corners or intersections sneak up on you.''
Brauer and his wife, Kimmy, the only participants to have taken part in every Pebble Beach Tour since it began in 1998, extended us an invitation to ride in their American-built Rolls on this year's Tour.
The Tour is open to all participants in the concours, and nearly 160 cars took part this year in the 60-mile drive to show that not all of the polished, often one-of-a-kind beauties are trailer queens. If there's a tie in the judging of a class, a car successfully completing the Tour will get the blue ribbon.
